Before you refill that reusable water bottle the next time you head to the gym, you may want to check out a recent study that found massive levels of potentially harmful bacteria residing in them.
While there are many merits to refilling a water bottle, including being kind to the planet, the study by Treadmill Reviews concluded that drinking water from them “can be many times worse than licking your dog’s toy.”
According to the study, four different types of reusable bottles were tested after being used by athletes for a week, and gross is really the only word that best describes the results.

The study found that the average athlete’s water bottle contains 313,499 CFU (colony-forming units of bacteria). Compare that with the 2,937 CFU found on the average dog toy and you might be a little more reluctant to reuse your favorite water bottle.
The worst type of water bottle, according to Treadmill Reviews, is the slide-top water bottle, which crawls with 933,340 CFU.
Screwtop water bottles contain nearly 162,000 CFU.
"While they are aren't as bacteria-ridden as the slide-top lids, drinking from these bottles can still be worse than eating a meal from your pet's dish or lapping up water from your kitchen sink," Treadmill Reviews said.
The study noted that nearly 99 percent of the bacteria found on the bottles were classified as harmful, with over 60 percent of those having the ability to make you sick. Traces of antibiotic-immune bacteria, such as E. coli, were also found on the bottles.
The study did not suggest throwing out your favorite water bottle, particularly since it's a great way to go green, but they did recommend measures to reduce, if not eliminate the threat to your health.
The best bottle to use is the straw-top bottle, which contained the fewest germs of the water bottles tested. They also suggest stainless steel bottle over plastic.
